Variac Transformer Home                          Resources and information on variac transformers are listed. Learn about the different applications and what a variac transformer can do.

3 Phase Variac Transformer
A 3 phase variac transformer will have 3 windings that are connected in a sequence that will match the incoming power. This will transform the power companies voltage to the level that is needed.

Variac Transformer Amps
is also called current as it is the amount of electric energy that is flowing through the variac transformer. The amps is the amount of electricity that is pulled from the voltage in the line.

Variable Voltage
Learn how to adjust output voltage from 0 to 117 percent of the units input voltage. A variac transformer would be the way to go.

Variac Wiring
The inductor on a variac transformer is shaped like a doughnut with wire that is wrapped through the center hole. Due to the resistance of the winding wire, heating can sometimes be present.

Single Phase Variac Transformer                       This type of variac transformer is mainly used on lighting and heating loads. They can either be air cooled or oil cooled.

Isolation/Variac Combination                     An isolation/variac combination type of transformer will isolate sensitive equipment from electrical noise and interference from the AC power line. It is used quite often in testing functions.

Variac Auto Transformer                       This type of transformer will either act like a step-up or a step-down transformer. A variac auto transformer will not provide isolation from any line current.

Variac Wiring

Variac WiringVariac wiring is wired in a configuration that will yield a higher voltage output rather than input voltage. The increased voltage with variac wiring is usually around 15% above the applied voltage but the output will vary between 0 volts and 15% above the input voltage.

There are occasions in which the input voltage is applied more than 15% lower than the maximum turns. This provides a much greater step-up output voltage. The variac wiring on a 240 volt variac can achieve 280 volts from 120 and a 480 volt variac is able to be configured with the variac wiring to provide around 560 volts from a 120 volt input.

Variac wiring consists of big windings of wire and a conductive slider moves along the windings of wire which will achieve the variable output voltage. Variac wiring uses inductance , not resistance when it reduces voltage. This is the reason why you get a higher output voltage that the input voltage on a variac transformer. The windings of the variac wiring are connected by a magnetic field rather than electrically connected. The magnetic field is created by the slider. The 60 cycle sine wave that is at the line voltage is taken by the variac and used to reduce or boost the voltage but does not change the sine wave.

The variac wiring is covered with an enamel and is magnetic. The single layer of variac wiring is wound very tightly around and through the hole of the core of the variac which is a doughnut shape. The variac wiring is then securely fastened on each end and the winding is then lacquered which locks the winding to the core of the variac transformer. The reason that the wire is insulated is because they will carry much more current than one that is not insulated. Variac wiring that is insulated will also transfer more heat and also carry more current. The variac transformer has a track that is machined around the doughnut shaped core. A carbon brush is attached and positioned to rotate around this track. This brings variable output voltage to the separate terminal.
