3 Phase Variac Transformer                         A 3 phase variac transformer will have 3 windings that are connected in a sequence that will match the incoming power. This will transform the power companies voltage to the level that is needed.

Variac Auto Transformer                       This type of transformer will either act like a step-up or a step-down transformer. A variac auto transformer will not provide isolation from any line current.

Variac Auto Transformer

The variac auto transformer is an electric transformer that will only have one winding. The winding on the variac auto transformer will have at least 3 taps which are electrical connection points. The voltage source and the load is connected to at least 2 of these taps. The other tap is at the end of the winding on the variac auto transformer and it is connected to both the source and the load circuit. A portion of the winding will act as part of both the primary and secondary winding in the variac auto transformer.

The variac auto transformer is capable of being equipped with many taps and an automatic switchgear that will then perform as an automatic voltage regulator. It will provide and maintain a steady voltage in a wide range of load conditions. When part of the winding coils are exposed and the secondary connection is connected though a sliding brush, a ratio of variable turns can be achieved. This allows for an excellent smooth control of the voltage.

The variac auto transformer is used in applications that require either a slight boost or a reduction in voltage to a load. One of the advantages of the variac auto transformer is that you get the same boosting or reducing effect with only using a single winding. This makes the variac auto transformer much cheaper to manufacture and it is much lighter than most transformers.  The single phase variac auto transformer is tapped with an output voltage range of usually 40 percent to 115 percent of the input voltage. If you connect at the middle and bottom of the variac auto transformer, the voltage will be halved.

The variac auto transformer comes in small benchtop applications that can be used by many engineers, scientists, etc. for testing. They allow for step up or step down of AC voltage. The fine range of control of voltage can be controlled by a simple twist of a knob that is usually located on top or on the side of the variac auto transformer. The wiring on a variac auto transformer are always insulated for transfer of more heat.
