3 Phase Variac Transformer                         A 3 phase variac transformer will have 3 windings that are connected in a sequence that will match the incoming power. This will transform the power companies voltage to the level that is needed.

Variac Auto Transformer                       This type of transformer will either act like a step-up or a step-down transformer. A variac auto transformer will not provide isolation from any line current.

Variac Applications

The variac transformer is used for controlling voltages and the variac applications are mainly used for quality control testing. Variac applications include many industrial and laboratory applications that control voltage, current, power, heat, speed, light and electromechanical forces.

The bench top variac applications consist of service shops, engineering design facilities, industrial and academic laboratories, manufacturing operations along with field installation teams. The fact that the bench top models are portable, makes these units valuable in these type of variac applications since actual operational parameters need to be met.

A full turn of a variac control shaft will vary the output voltage in variac applications. The light or heat output or the speed of the load is then varied from zero to the line voltage or 17 percent above. When a line voltage is only half that is required by the load, the variac can double the voltage in variac applications while it provides full control of the output. Another variac application is that a variac can be used as a phase shifter in 3-phase circuits. It can also be used as a color temperature control along with calibrating voltmeters, ammeters and wattmeters.
