Variac Transformer Home Resources and information on variac transformers are listed. Learn about the different applications and what a variac transformer can do.
Single Phase Variac Transformer
This type of variac transformer is mainly used on lighting and heating
loads. They can either be air cooled or oil cooled. Isolation/Variac Combination An isolation/variac combination type of transformer will isolate sensitive equipment from electrical noise and interference from the AC power line. It is used quite often in testing functions.

Variable Voltage
A variac transformer divides the voltage. It does this by dividing the impedance that is connected to the input voltage into two different parts. Just a fraction of the divided input impedance that is connected to the output will determine the output voltage. Thus, you get a variable voltage from the variac. The variac has what we call a tap which is a conductive slider that will move along the length of the inductor. The inductor is the doughnut shape that is wrapped through the center of the hole and around the doughnut shape. The slider is an arm that is equipped with a carbon brush contact that rotates on an axle that is located on the doughnut shape. The winding wire has enamel insulation that is removed when the carbon brush touches the winding. This in turn makes the contact form a circuit through part of the winding. The input current on a variac can be reduced by the turn ratios that are between the primary and the secondary winding. The secondary winding is the one that is used for the output variable voltage. Some variac voltages will allow 0 to input line voltage or 17 percent above the line voltage. The amount of variable voltage depends on the manufacturer of the variac. A lot of electronic service departments will use a variac to check out their equipment at low and high operating variable voltages. Engineering departments also test their equipment to make sure variable voltages are correct. Contact your TEMCo specialist to find out more about variable voltage.
