Single Phase Variac Transformer

A single phase variac transformer is a much smaller unit generally than a three phase variac transformer. The line voltage on a single phase variac transformer is normally 120 volts or 240 volts. If perhaps, your line voltage should be less than nominal, the single phase variac transformer will work perfectly with no lowering of the electricity current. Line voltage of 140 volts can be applied to a 120 volt single phase variac transformer as long as the maximum output voltage required is not any more than the line voltage that is applied. 

When the single phase line voltage is 480 to 560 volts, two single phase variac transformer units that are rated 240-V of operation will have to be used . The coils of the single phase variac transformers should connect in a series across the line with the load connected to one side of each of the single phase variac transformer units. When this takes place, the load cannot be grounded at any point.

The single phase variac transformer is trouble free and gives efficient means of varying and controlling the AC voltages. The variation on a single phase variac transformer is achieved by a brush arm that has a carbon tip on it. This rotates around the track that is around the core of the single phase variac transformer. The wiring on the single phase variac transformer is wound tightly around the core of the unit. The wiring is insulated which carries more current and transfers heat more efficiently. There are basically three styles of the three phase variac transformer. They consist of open, encapsulated and enclosed.
