3 Phase Variac Transformer
The 3 phase variac transformer is considerably larger than a single phase variac. They are available up to 480 volts at over 300 Amps. The 3 phase variac transformer can be a two gang open delta configuration which is for controlling the voltage of delta three phase voltage source. A three gang wye configuration is also available which controls the three phase wye voltages. If your system has a common neutral or ground between the source and the load, when using a gang unit, the neutral or the ground should be connected to the common terminals of the 3 phase variac transformer assembly. If the system doesn't have a neutral, the load should be balanced or the 3 phase variac transformer could be damaged. It is highly recommended to place a fuse in each phase that is between the 3 phase variac transformer and your load. When you want to achieve a wide range of control of the voltage and the current with a 3 phase variac transformer, the following connections can be used: 2, 4, 8, 10, 15, 20A, 20B, 32, 40, 50, 100, 150, 200 Amps. These units are manufactured in three phase configurations. Ratings that are above 200 Amps 3 phase variac transformer units are parallel which enhance the current capacity. The standard parallel combinations for 3 phase variac transformer current of 300 Amps is two units of 150 Amp. For 400 Amp it would be two units of 200 Amp 3 phase variac transformer that is connected in parallel. The 3 phase variac transformer will often be seen as an open floor mounting type or can be an enclosed type. Most of the 3 phase variac transformers are constructed as a toroidal which is a doughnut shaped transformer that has a magnet steel core. Enamel covered magnet wire is then tightly wound around the core. Each end of the winding is fastened and then all of the winding is lacquered which locks the winding to the core. A track is machined around the doughnut shape. Rotating around this track is a carbon brush which will bring the 3 phase variac transformer output voltage to the separate terminal.
